Though the Avanti has only been playing commercially for about five years, the four of us have been friends for about 30 years. During that time, we have all played in other quartets, orchestras and various other performing ensembles.

In 1973, when my violin teacher said: “A good violinist always plays string quartets.” At first I didn’t understand. Now after many happy years of quartet playing, I realize why he said that. It’s both the most difficult and potentially the most satisfying musical ensemble for a “classical” player. Also, in addition to the thousands of traditional classical compositions for string quartet, there are thousands of modern arrangements of “popular” tunes to choose from when assembling a repertoire.
